Scope of Position :

The Social Service Assistant provides direct and/or referral services to meet family and individual material, emotional, and spiritual needs. The scope of service provided is determined by the service center's social services programs. The Social Service Assistant communicates with persons seeking assistance in person, by telephone, or electronically, assesses stated needs to render available aid, performs data entry and clerical tasks, creates records and files, and keeps work areas organized and supplied. A person in this position will also help with supervising Salvation Army Christmas programs. This person must represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner at all times in personal conduct and appearance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required :

Knowledge required: use a computer effectively and efficiently in the working environment; use standard office machines (e.g., fax, copier, multi-line telephone, keyboard); use standard office practices and procedures; read, write, and speak the English language to express ideas and communicate effectively.

Skill required: type 25 wpm; perform data entry using database programs; use Microsoft software (primarily Outlook, Word) to correctly create basic documents (notes, memos, emails) and reports; use basic math (add, subtract, multiply, divide); establish effective working relationships; attention to detail, operate a motor vehicle.

Ability required: Interact with individuals using generally accepted business behaviors and standards. Use interpersonal skills to deal effectively with others in favorable and unfavorable situations. Organize, prioritize, and plan own work. Multitask, i.e., change work focus or respond to change of conditions and interruptions in workflow. Learn new systems and procedures. Problem solves, i.e., the ability to identify problems and find effective solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • 1. Answer Check voicemail regularly. Route phone calls or take and deliver messages. Return phone calls in a timely manner, as needed, in relation to job duties.
  • Greet, screen, and direct clients, visitors, and guests.
  • Know and follow the policies, and procedures of existing programs.
  • Interview and assess requests for assistance to determine the type of assistance to be provided. Provide direct assistance to meet requests that are within the scope of the Social Services programs. Refer clients to other resources available in the community.5. Refer clients to corps officers or local churches for pastoral contact if client
  • Prepare designated quantities of food and personal items for distribution as needed. Alternatively, help clients make their food and personal item selections in the food pantry.
  • Take inventory of goods on hand as Make order or inform the appropriate person of the need for replenishing supplies.
  • Receive food and material orders and donations. Issue receipt for donations of monetary and in-kind gifts. Record amounts received. Stock shelves. Store foods according to established standards, procedures, and Food Codes.
  • Drive vehicle to pick up food order or donations as
  • Enter data to create and maintain electronic files and records in assigned databases. Keep files up to date. Protect confidentiality of information.
  • Create, produce, and provide reports as requested.
  • As directed, recruit and orient volunteers and Community Service Workers to the Social Services Department. Provide training and direct them to perform authorized tasks.
  • Work with other staff to set-up and host meetings with paid and volunteer applicants for staffing seasonal programs, Christmas, Back-to-School, etc., as requested.
  • Create The types of writing primarily will be of a practical and factual nature. Correspondence is primarily informal. Types of correspondence include notes, memos, emails, letters providing simple narratives, descriptions, summaries, and requests.
  • Keep assigned work and public area(s) neat, clean, and safe. Keep informational materials supplied and straightened.
  • Receive mail and Distribute as appropriate.

Physical Requirements:

Working Conditions:

The Salvation Army Newport Corps building consists of 2 stories with stairs, no elevator, but handicapped access to both via 2 separate parking lots (1 for each floor). There are security cameras and a security system throughout the building for the safety of the employees, volunteers, corps members, and property. The Mobile Food Pantry takes place at the Lincoln City Church of Christ and is held outdoors in a drive-thru style distribution. Other programs and services are held at various locations throughout the county and Division, and travel to these locations may be required.
