Job Description

Due to a retirement, Sioux Center High School is seeking a highly motivated Special Education Instructor for the 2025-2026 academic school year. This position's primary responsibilities will be working with our Level 2 and Level 3 students alongside a department of 4 additional strong and collaborative special education teachers.

We are looking for a passionate Special Education Instructor who will be responsible for working with our adolescents who have physical, cognitive, and/or emotional disabilities. These educators also work with the students’ parents, psychologists, social workers, and school psychologists, among others, to develop individualized education programs (IEPs) for each student that address the student’s unique strengths and challenges.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum)
  • Iowa Teaching License (with appropriate endorsements)
  • Mandatory Reporter: Child Abuse & Dependent Adult Abuse

Responsibilities

  • Assess students’ skills and educational needs
  • Adapting lesson plans to meet each students’ individualized needs
  • Tracking students’ performance
  • Developing, modifying, and updating IEPs
  • Discussing students’ progress with their other teachers
  • Effective communication to maintain positive relationships with students and their parents
  • Adaptable and able to pick up new teaching methods
  • Compassionate and patient with students
  • Able to work with students from different backgrounds and who have different abilities
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems.
  • Maintain an inventory of classroom instructional supplies, textbooks, and materials, and exercise control of the care of the same.
  • Be informed of the educational philosophy, goals, and policies of the district.
  • Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Maintain district policies and regulations.
  • Participate in initiating, implementing and coordinating any changes in curriculum.
  • Stay up-to-date with current trends and developments in ESL teaching and incorporate them into instruction.
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the building administration and in compliance with the negotiated agreement.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.
